The National Commission for Democracy (NCD) has in a press statement reminded both the government and the people of Sierra Leone of the need to maintain law and order, saying the rule of law must prevail in the best interest of every Sierra Leonean.
A press release issued by the Commission on the 29th of November, 2023 urged for a peaceful atmosphere in the country, saying it has far-reaching implications that could otherwise undermine the peace and stability of the country, with the potential to also undermine the consolidation of democratic good governance in the country.
It stated that in the given circumstances, all must allow the sincere commitment to the tenets of democratic good governance to hold sway over any baser or gross instinct. NCD in its statement stated that when the days ahead are seen through the lens of the rule of law, perpetrators will be brought to book and the situation will return to normal with the country emerging out of it in one piece.
“Together we will all come out of this dark chapter in one piece even as the nation’s democracy is allowed to work in the best interest of Sierra Leone. Yes, to the peace and stability of Sierra Leone where the rule of law prevails. No to lawlessness and arbitrariness as the country is allowed to move in the right direction,” part of the release reads.
The Commission in the press statement described the November 26, 2023, security breach in the country as actions orchestrated to undermine the peace and stability of “our motherland, Sierra Leone.”
It pointed out that by its historical antecedent, the people of Sierra Leone have tasted the bitterness of war and cannot afford to go down that path anymore, thus the more reason for all well-meaning Sierra Leoneans to speak with one voice to condemn such “dastardly act and in essence work assiduously to prevent a further bloodbath.” It stated that NCD holds as sacred the view that the loss of any life through ‘unscrupulous means’ is inimical to the overall development of the country.
“It stands to reason that the proclivity for bad blood in the given situation appears inevitable, thus the need to condemn this sad chapter with a determination to collectively ensure and enhance the thorough and sincere investigation of the matter as effort is expended to prevent its reoccurrence,” the statement reads.
The Commission also commended the bravery of the gallant military officers and all other security personnel who did all they could to repel the perpetrators of the “dastardly act.”
It recalled the Sunday incident, especially with the release of inmates from the Main Correctional Centre that left the entire country in a panic mood.
