Newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in on the 13th July 2023, according to a public notice issued by the Parliament of Sierra Leone.
The notice which was released 6th July 2023 states“Pursuant to Section 83 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6 of 1991) every Member of Parliament duly elected at the General Elections of 24th June 2023 shall before taking his seat in Parliament take and subscribe the Oath of Office for Members of Parliament as prescribed in the Third Schedule of the said Constitution on Thursday 13" July 2023”.
The notice stated that President Julius Maada Bio as required per law has directed the Clerk of Parliament to summon the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone on the announced date at ten o’clock in the morning in the Chamber of Parliament. It called on all MPs to attend the sitting.
The administration in their notice invited all MPs to an induction programme to take place on the 12th July 2023 in Committee Room One in parliament.
Members of the new parliament were elected in the just concluded 24th June 2023 General Elections. Parliamentary results were announced on the 1st July 2023, with the Ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) winning eighty-one seats, whilst the Main Opposition Party the All People’s Congress (APC) won fifty-four seats.
The Sixth Parliament is composed of only two political parties with the incumbent having majority of the seats unlike the last parliament which was made up of four different parties, and independent candidates. At that time the main opposition APC had fifty-nine seats, SLPP fifty-eight, National Grand Coalition (NGC) - four seats, Coalition for Change (C4C) –eight and three independent MPs. There were also 14 Paramount Chief representatives.
