RUFP leader, others make peace commitment

By Alpha Abu

Presidential Candidate of the Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP), Abdulai Saccoh together with leaders of nine other political parties have pledged their support for peaceful elections next week.

Addressing supporters of the various opposition parties who organised the event, and invited members of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) at Brookfields Hotel, Freetown on Tuesday 13th June, the RUFP leader said they were asserting their non-violence posture before, and during, and after the polls scheduled for Saturday 24th June.

Saccoh said the people have the mandate to elect the government of their choice and stressed the need for unity which he said can lead to the development of Sierra Leone.

He made complimentary remarks about incumbent President Julius Maada Bio whom he said is a visionary leader with a good heart and one who can unite the nation.

The nine other parties had their presidential candidates or running mates also making statements centred on fostering national cohesion. They praised the SLPP government for helping women a lot by safeguarding their rights and empowering them. They said President Bio is a worthy leader who is committed to a cohesive and stable nation.

Augusta Teima, President of the All Political Parties Women’s Association said it was quite impressive to see such a large turnout despite the looming threats of violence (as shared on social media).

Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Memunatu Pratt thanked the opposition parties for registering their commitment to peace and assured them of SLPP’s fullest support.

United Democratic Party (UDM), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Peoples Liberation Party (PLP), and United National People’s Party (UNPP) were present at the event.

It was also attended by leaders of the Citizens Democratic Party (CDP), National Unity and Reconciliation Party (NURP), Republican National Independence Party (ReNIP), RUFP, and SLPP.
