The maiden Women’s Football Premier League has ended with Mogbwemo Queens as winners.
Reacting to the success of the club, its owner Emmanuel Sahr Tondoneh Esq. said it was one of happiness, amazement and extreme pride for the young women whom he said “have shown resilience, tenacity and determination that it is not impossible, and have swam against the tide”.
Tondoneh told Politico on Saturday that collectively as management they were delighted that their diverse investment in the team did not go in vain.
He thanked the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) and the Women’s Premier League Board for creating the enabling environment for the competition to go on, despite challenges.
He was full of praise for the players, individuals, groups and the fans whom he said took their time out, and resources, to support Mogbwemo Queens.
On looking ahead, Tondoneh said like every other club around the world, at the end of the season, they will be having management meetings. He said definitely if there’s an opportunity to make the team better, they will be exploring that, and in effect strengthening the squad before the start of the next season.
Meanwhile the President of Sierra Leone Julius Maada Bio in a tweet has congratulated the newly-crowned champions. “Football is a great unifier of people and a great lesson on team work that brings people together and promotes unity”, he tweeted.
He said his administration “remains committed to supporting the advancement of the women’s football league in Sierra Leone”.
The Queens, captained by Lilian Saidu secured 55 points from the 22 matches played, with a positive goal difference of 36.
