As they debated to approve the newly- appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone, Abdulai Massiambay Bangura Members of Parliament have called on the nominee to make a change in the Justice system and ensure the judiciary gets a good reputation and build public trust.
Speaking in parliament on the 8th February 2024, Deputy Leader of the Opposition 2 Aaron A. Koroma said: “Please go to that justice sector and make a change. We want a court that Sierra Leoneans can trust, and restore the integrity of this institution.”
Addressing Bangura, Koroma said that the nominee is going to an institution that is challenged, stating that the reputation of the institution has been watered down.
The MP cited how nowadays political parties resort to dialogue and out-of-court settlement than going to court. He said some communities prefer using arbitration than going to court and called on the newly- appointed Judge to make a difference in the system.
The Leader added that he believes the nominee can make a change, saying that the reward of hard work is more work. He explained that when the nominee was Chairman of the Political Parties Regulations Commission (PPRC), he was hardworking, committed, independent, and upheld integrity whilst overseeing political parties.
“Had it not been for him, no party would have a flag bearer. He was a fine appointee when he was nominated and served as chairman of PPRC, I want to say he did that job with diligence,” he said.
Representing Kailahun District, Quintin Salia-Konneh called on all to trust that Bangura will be free from making any biased decision as he was appointed in that position to serve the nation and do justice.
The Leader of the Opposition Abdul Kargbo, like the other MPs heaped praises on the nominee, but was quick to ask that Bangura transmit the same spirit at his previous job to the judiciary.
Amongst the nominees approved were: Abdulai Massiambay Bangura as Justice of the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone, Joseph Egbenda Kapuwa- Chairman of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), Sallay Ndimawa Adams, Board member at the National Communication Authority, Saidu Ali Larkoh, and Abdul Samad Kamara - Chairman of National Youth Commission and Board member of National Youth Service, respectively.
