Sierra Leone opposition MP denies obstructing police

Member of Parliament Mohamed Bangura of the opposition APC has denied obstructing the work of the police as he gave evidence in a case before Principal magistrate Mark Ngegba in Freetown.

Led in evidence by his lawyer Ibrahim Turay, the 51-year-old MP told the court that on the 11th of June 2022, he was in the company of the recently elected flag bearer of the APC, the new deputy chairman, and others heading towards Sambaya Bendugu to attend their bye-election campaign program.

He said an Assistant Inspector General of Police, Gabriel Tommy, who was at a police checkpoint at Mathora village, Kholifa Rowala Chiefdom in Tonkolili District, stopped his car and told him not to proceed to Sambaya Bendugu community for the campaign. The accused said all he did was talk to the police officer.

The parliamentarian and the APC charlady in Tonkolili district, Yabom Sesay are facing five-count charges ranging from assaulting the police officer while on duty and using insulting words on him, calculated to provoke the officer, and breaching the peace. The charges also include intimidating the assistant inspector general of police and threatening to hit him with a vehicle.

In another case magistrate, Mark Ngegba has issued bench warrants to four accused persons for failing to attend a court hearing in an ongoing kidnapping case, of a Nigerian national, Austine Nwachi Nwaru.

The four accused persons wanted on warrant are 34-year-old Salifu Yema Samura, 33 –year- old Sahr Kamanda, Sead Fuad Thoronka, and Mohamed A. Turay.
