Sierra Leone were beaten 2-1 by the Gambian on Tuesday in their final match of the WAFU Zone A U-20 tournament in Senegal.
Their first match ended 1-1 against the hosts – Senegal. This has paved the way for the Gambian Scorpions to progress to the next stage.
Both teams were solid and created a couple of chances during the first half of the game and came close to scoring. Shooting Stars managed to take some shots at goal but it were their opponents who had most of the chances but were unlucky.
When play resumed in the second half it was Emmanuel Samadia for Sierra Leone who had the first chance in the early minutes of second half which could have been given his side the lead, but it was Adama Kanteh, the No. 4 man for the Gambians, who struck the first goal from a far range in the 51 minutes. Both teams were desperate for a win to progress to the next round of the competition and the second half was full of momentum as expected, with both teams mounting onslaughts.
But Shooting Stars had their hopes dashed when Momodou Bojang added another goal for the Scorpions with only four minutes of normal time left. However, Abdul R. Conteh gave his side a consolation goal at the 89 th minute. Shooting Stars left the competition with only one point from two matches played.
Despite their elimination from the tournament, the boys gave an impressive performance from start to finish in both of the games they played. The U-20 coach, Abu Bakarr Kamara, said he was not happy with the result despite the good performance from the boys. The team returned home from Senegal yesterday.
