Prosecutors have told the High Court that the telephone call log of the third accused in the on-going treason trial proves that he was in communication with alleged perpetrators of the November 26th 2023 attempted coup on the day of the incident.
Emmanuel Salifu Kamara was, until his arrest, one of the security guards (police) to former president, Ernest Bai Koroma at his home in Makeni.
Under cross-examination by lawyer Ady Macauley on Thursday 7th March, 2024 Detective Abubakarr Kargbo admitted that beside the telephone call log, there was no other piece of evidence linking the third accused to the failed coup and that there was also no evidence that the third accused was in Freetown on the day of the failed coup.
The prosecution witness agreed that there was evidence indicating that the third accused had been in Freetown after the 20th October 2023, until he was arrested in connection with the coup. The third accused had also admitted to investigators that on the day of the incident, he did make phone calls to two of the alleged assailants, who, according to him, were his work colleagues attached to the former president.
His statement to the police indicated that he called his colleagues after getting information via social media about the attack on Freetown, adding that he had wanted to know their whereabouts as they did not show up for duty on the day in question.
He said when he called one of the colleagues he named as Yapo, the phone rang but he didn’t pick up the call. He said the telephone of his other colleague called Kabba was switched off. He said he was in Makeni before, during and after the incident.
