A REAL DISGRACE IN THE MIDDLE OF KING JIMMY BRIDGE
Is Mayor of the SUN really telling us that she hasn’t seen the mess in the middle of King Jimmy Bridge over the last one year? For the records raw sewerage is flowing from somewhere in your city Madam, ending up in the middle of that bridge which your predecessor, a man called Bababode made so much noise about following its collapse and reconstruction – never mind at that inflated cost of millions of dollars. Too vexed to state the amount! We really feel sorry for the people who work around that area – including officers at the Central Police Station – and those of us who in trying to beat the traffic jam in the middle of town are compelled to use Wallace Johnson Street.
The last time we passed that way we saw a stick erected inside that hole with what looked like a piece of the Berlin Wall near the impact point, apparently aimed at warning motorists about the danger ahead.
When Mayor of the SUN talks about Transforming Freetown, some of us feel happy because we live in the city and we want to be able to show our visitors around our Transformed Freetown. We surely can’t do that with ease with such raw sewerage flowing down a place as important as King Jimmy Bridge and possibly in other places. So we don’t think we should be giving people as important as our dear Mayor of the SUN any ultimatum, but as good citizens of this city we appeal to our gracious lady to take a stroll to that bridge from her office and then instruct her sanitary engineers to fix that problem within 24 hours or risk the incurring our wrath. It’s that serious!
ARE WASSCE SUPERVISORS UNDER ATTACK? REALLY?
So we have reached a stage now where supervisors of the ongoing West Africa Senior School Certificate Exam or WASSCE are now being attacked by candidates, and believe it or not, school authorities themselves. Now, this looks and feels like some Nollywood movie. In other words it’s not happening in the real world. It’s the fertile imagination of some movie producer.
You can imagine how shocked we were when we saw a press release from WAEC calling attention to this total outrage, describing it as a criminal offence. Of course it is. But why is all of this happening?
1. WAEC needs total overhaul of its infrastructure and procedures starting with them moving from that hole they call headquarters, into a much more respectable building and surrounding.
2. The massive cheating in the exams leading to them cancelling results has put a considerable dent on their image as an examining body. It’s no easy PR to clean WAEC up again.
3. There is absolutely zero need deploying police officers to exam centers. When school authorities make it impossible to conduct exams for their children, go back to your office and let them be.
4. Always move candidates from the comfort zones of their schools into new locations - let’s see how teachers from Kankalay Islamic School for example will misbehave to invigilators at Government Secondary Technical School.
5. Or we can’t manage our own teenagers, let’s send all our candidates over to Ghana for the exam and bring their own candidates here. How about that?
