On Sunday, September 5, residents of Kaloum in central Conakry woke up to the sound of gunfire. Several hours after and following a deadly gunfight in the Sekhoutouréya palace which resulted in the death of about 22 soldiers, mainly from the Bataillon autonome de la sécurité présidentielle (BASP), they learnt that the government of President Alpha Conde had been overthrown. On August 24, 2021, Chad’s former President, Hissen Habré, died in Senegal. Reports indicate that he fell ill in prison about a week before his death and was taken to a private clinic in Dakar. He is said to have contracted the COVID-19 virus at this clinic. By the time he was moved to the Hospital Principal, it was too late.  

NaCOVERC races against time in Sierra Leone's latest vaccination drive

After interruption to its Covid-19 vaccination programme due to jab shortages, the National Covid-19 Emergency Response Center (NaCOVERC) on Monday, 23 August resumed the exercise.

But this leg has been different in that the process was designed to see an increase in both coverage and speed of the vaccination process nationwide. Officials said the goal was to reach as many eligible persons as possible. Due to the short shelf life of the available jabs, the authorities were racing against time to beat the expiry of the vaccines in stock.
