150 fire victim families get cash support from CRS/Caritas

It was all smiles at the Rokel Bank, Congo Cross branch yesterday as heads of 150 families affected by various fire incidences in twelve communities across Freetown queued up at the financial facility to receive vouchers for cash support provided by Catholic Relief Services.

The whole exercise being facilitated by Caritas Sierra Leone continued  late into the afternoon as  the jubilant beneficiaries many of whom are single parents  received monies ranging from 6,500 to 14,500 New Leone.

MP wants stiffer punishment for child marriage in Sierra Leone

In a bid to discourage child marriage, and end the health implications and other challenges that the practice brings along, Member of Parliament representing Pujehun District Mariama Munia Zombo has given notice to introduce the bill entitled Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024, which carries stiffer punishment for defaulters.

Education officer raises concern over WASSCE examination

The District Coordinator in Kenema District for for the Free Quality Education, Abdul Karim Vangahun has on 28th May this year raised concerns over the ongoing West African Secondary School Certificate Examination(WASSCE) in that part of the country

In an interview with Politico, Vangahun described the ongoing WASSCE as relatively calm, but that there are several challenges which he believes affect the examination process.

Bio will not overturn tripartite recommendations – Peace Commission boss

The Executive Secretary of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, Hawa Samai has confirmed that President Julius Maada Bio won't overturn recommendations that the Tripartite Committee might come up with at the end of its work.

Samai made this confirmation at the government’s weekly press briefing hosted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 4th June 2024 while updating the media about the mandates of the Tripartite Committee.

Peace Commission secretary in women’s leadership training

The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) has been represented by its Executive Secretary Hawa Samai at training on “Women’s Leadership in National Defense” held in Monterey, California, the United States.

 The training focused on human-centered design principles to enhance the participating trainees’ experience and best practices in learning.

Over 1.6 million children receive Polio vaccine

Over 1.6 million children under the age of five have been vaccinated in the just concluded first round of polio vaccination across the country, with a second round of vaccination, targeting all children below five years, to start on 8th of June this month, according to a statement from the Deputy Health Minister 1, Dr. Charles Senessie.

Senessie made this disclosure during a round two vaccination campaign press briefing on 5th June 2024 at the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) in Freetown.

Special Court engages ETU students on country’s civil war
