$4 million timber project kicks off

An indigenous businessman, Alie Suma, has revealed that he has invested some US$4 million in the construction of a timber processing factory in the country.

Suma, who is the owner and executive director of Timber Harvester Processors and Exporters Sierra Leone Limited, made the revelation at the turning of the sod ceremony at the factory’s Waterloo site.

Sierra Leone storm leaves hundreds homeless in Kono

A heavy storm in the evening hours of Easter Sunday blew off the roofs of scores of dwelling houses in Koidu, completely destroying some of the houses, leaving hundreds of people homeless, with property worth millions of Leones wasted.

There were no fatalities in the aftermath of the storm but some people sustained injuries.

Such was the intensity of the storm that some economic trees planted houses to serve as shields were virulently uprooted.

Storm in Sierra Leone affects 75 houses in Kabala

A two-day rainstorm has hit and destroyed some 75 houses and damaged properties worth millions of leones in the northern town of Kabala of Koinadugu district, authorities have said.

The chairman Koinadugu district council, Sheku Samuel Kamara, told Politico that he was informed by some local authorities of Neya chiefdom and asked for his intervention.

Lake awards for musicians

Chief Executive Officer, Lake Production, has told newsmen that his entertainment company would be awarding Sierra Leonean musicians for outstanding contributions to the music industry on April 27, Independence Day.

Alhaji Kelfala Tarawally, akaLaj K, revealed this at a press conference held yesterday at Stadium Hostel in Freetown. He said the award ceremony would also serve as “stimuli to discourage our music stars and their fan bases from violent and riotous conducts”.

Defence boycotts Sierra Leone Court Martial

The prosecution in the ongoing mutiny trial of 14 soldiers seems to be running into trouble. Impeccable sources say the defence lawyers are on an indefinite strike of proceedings over pay. They are Julius Cuffie, Thomas Beah and IP Mammie.

It started last week when the defence bench had fresh faces with those who had put up "some sterling performances" as admitted to by families and relatives of the accused men, nowhere to be seen.

Why Sierra Leone social security bosses were sacked

A late night press release on state radio and television on Thursday announced the sacking of the Director General of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), Samuel Bangura; his very powerful deputy director general in charge of finance and membership which is the essence of the Trust, Gibril Saccoh and the head of investment Idris Turay.

Sources close to NASSIT and State House say the dismissals followed a letter written to the president by the Chairman of the Board, Jacob Kanu in which he asked for the sacking of the entire management.
