Graceland Sierra Leone on Saturday 8 March celebrated International Women’s Day with women and children at the Tombo community centre, a fishing community in the rural Western Area of Freetown.

The nongovernmental organisation, which deals with women’s issues of diverse proportions, said drama and procession by primary school pupils from Newton, Grafton, Tombo and Tokeh also formed part of the celebration.

One of the presentations by the children was on how to take care of our environment.

President Ernest Bai Koroma has said that "Sierra Leone will never develop if women do not play critical roles in the development process". He warned law enforcement officers who "compromise cases of abuse against women and girls to desist".

Addressing a public ceremony to mark International Women's Day in Pujehun, Koroma outlined efforts he made recently in Nigeria to recruit magistrates and science teachers to serve in Sierra Leone and announced that females who study engineering would receive a scholarship.

Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Court No.2 in Freetown has warned the police not to charge cases to court on grounds of human rights but rather based on evidence.

He made the comment while hearing a case of alleged human trafficking yesterday, March 10, involving a Togolese and a Ghanaian both of whom are facing a 3-count charge of human trafficking, harbouring and unlawful entry into Sierra Leone.

Concerns over a missing child at Sembehun village some 40 miles from Kenema have heightened in the eastern provincial headquarter town, almost two years since the case was first reported.

Apprehension over the apparent lack of seriousness in investigating the matter was strongly manifested in the many questions directed at the newly transferred Assistant Inspector General of Police, East, Alfred Karrow Kamara, during a discussion programme on the local Eastern Radio.
