Chimpanzee held captive in eastern Sierra Leone

Efforts by the Staff of Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary to take custody of a young Chimpanzee found being held in a cage as a pet by an unnamed individual in Koidu, Kono District has been thwarted by those holding the animal.

 According to the Communications Officer of the sanctuary, Sidikie Bayoh, the person holding the chimp had requested money in exchange for the primate.

Mother jailed 24 years for throwing baby in a pit latrine

Justice Adrian Fisher has sentenced Fatmata Kamara to 24 years, after being found guilty of Manslaughter by throwing her newborn baby in a pit toilet.

The mother was said to have been convicted weeks ago and her judgment was delivered on the 19th of September, 2023 at the main Law Courts Building, Freetown.

No voter registration for Sierra Leone’s village head elections

The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) which is mandated by law to conduct all elections in Sierra Leone has announced October 28 for the conduct of 120 village head elections, noting that no fresh voter registration will be conducted in that regard.

Speaking to Politico on 19th of September this year, the Deputy Director of Media and Communication of ECSL, Christopher  Jones  said they are ‘set’ and that ‘planning is on’ for the said election for people residing in the Western Area Rural District.

Sierra Leone president calls to promote stability, in UN speech

Speaking as chairman of the Group of Seven Plus (g7+) at the high-level political forum on sustainable development on the 18th of September 2023, Bio said promoting peace and stability should continue to be central to implementing the SDGs, noting that violence undermines development.

ACC to monitor $42 Million project

The Coordinator for Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) Project of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Patrick Monrovia has said the institution will monitor the implementation of a $42 million dollar grant given by the World Bank to the Government of Sierra Leone.

Monrovia was speaking to Politico in an interview on the 19th of September this year.
