The civil society Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Network (WASHNet) Sierra Leone has called one of the country’s water companies, SALWACO to provide clean drinking water for rural communities in much the same way councils are mandated by Local Government Act of 2004.
Ansumana Soko, a member of WASHNet told a press conference in Freetown that local councils and the water company should stop the blame game and partner to provide the "badly-needed" resource for the rural people.
Protesting street traders
Thousands of street traders commonly called Abacha Babes, thronged the streets of the Sierra Leonean capital Freetown today not to sell their wares but to protest against government for the planned clearing of the street of traders.
Tam-Baryoh
Sierra Leonean journalist David Tam-Baryoh was released on bail late last night after he had been detained for a few hours following a complaint against him by a government minister.
His bail bond was in the sum of Le 100 million (US$ 23,000).

A senior police officer at the Criminal Investigations Department has confirmed to Politico that journalist David Tam-Baryoh has been arrested. The source would give no further detail on what he is being detained for or even the reason for his detention.

While many were busy celebrating the coming of the new year last night a young man in the northern Sierra Leonean city of Makeni had a completely different plan.
25-year-old Alhaji Kamara, a resident of Patefu Masimbo some three miles outside Makeni apparently hanged himself at dawn on New Year's Day, using a nylon rope which he ostensibly tied to the ceiling of the Science Building of the St Francis Secondary School.
