2 deaths and 72 arrests in Sierra Leone’s 9/11 protests

Two people were killed and 72 arrests were made in the wake of pockets of protests that happened in parts of the Western Area on Monday September 11, according to Media One of the Sierra Leone Police, Assistant Commissioner Brima Kamara.

He was addressing the media at the weekly press conference of the Ministry of Information and Civic Education held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Tuesday 12th of September.

Teacher jailed 10 years for rape of pupil, 8

Justice Samuel O Taylor has sentenced a 26-year-old teacher- Osman D. Kargbo, 24 year old Ibrahim Rogers, and Bockarie Sannoh (45) to ten years imprisonment each,  after they were individually found guilty in separate cases of sexual penetration.   

Before the sentence was handed down to teacher Kargbo at the Freetown High Court No.7, Justice Taylor said the man was indicted for having sexually penetrated an eight-year-old class three pupil on 20th December 2019, after he had sent her to buy top up for his mobile phone.

Inconclusive probe into attacks on journalists in Sierra Leone

The latest press review report by Media Reform Coordinating Group(MRCG)has indicated that several attacks such as online death threat, attempted assassination, and assaults amongst others have been made against journalists in Sierra Leone. However, the  outcome of the  investigations done so far remain unknown to the public.  

Kamarainba freed on compassionate bail – Lawyer confirms

Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai the Lawyer for Mohammed Kamarainba Mansaray has confirmed to Politico that his client has been granted bail on "compassionate grounds."

Speaking to Politico in an interview on 9th September this year, amidst social media posts about the release of the 2018 presidential Candidate for the opposition Alliance Democratic Party, who is serving a 32-year sentence for sexual penetration of a minor, Abdulai said his client is not well and cannot be in prison as he needs medical attention.

Stakeholders examine Sierra Leone media policy

 The Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) last week convened a workshop that brought together key figures from Sierra Leone’s media landscape, to Review the Draft National Media and Information Policy. 

The workshop was held at the Dohas Hotel in Bo on the 7th of September, 2023.

 In his presentation, the National Coordinator of MRCG, Dr. Francis Sowa, emphasized that the document presented is a compilation of discussions on key issues that could inform future policy decisions.
