Sierra Leone gets 1st female Sports Minister

The second list of appointed cabinet ministers has seen Augusta James Teima become the first woman Sports Minister of Sierra Leone.

Her appointment was confirmed in a press release from the Secretary to President Julius Maada Bio the president released the list of appointed ministers on the 15th July, 2023.

She replaces Ibrahim Nyelenkeh who according to many members of a popular Sports Whatsapp forum did well during his tenure as sports minister.

Unidentified body discovered in Waterloo

The Police in Waterloo say residents in a community called Fullah Town have alerted officers to the site of an unidentified adult male corpse.

An update from the Waterloo Police Division Media dated 15th July, 2023 said the body  of the man whose  name and address could not be traced, was discovered with a deep  wound to the forehead, and with a broken leg and several lacerations all over his body.

The Waterloo Police had asked the public to help them with useful information in respect of the said corpse.

Bench warrant for juror in murder trial

Justice Adrian Fisher has ordered a bench warrant for a juror, Osman D. Conteh who could spend one week in detention for failing to attend a murder trial in which he is one of the 12 jurors.

Justice Fisher said at the High Court No.1 on Friday 14th July 2023 that the punishment for the contempt of court offence will be instituted until next Friday, the adjourned date for the murder trial.

Sierra Leone swears in new Parliament amid opposition boycott

After several controversies around the credibility of the June 24 General Elections in Sierra Leone, 96 elected Members of Parliament and Paramount Chief Members of parliament out of a total of  149 (one hundred and forty-nine) yesterday subscribed to the oath of office.

Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson  Kamara is to make his appearance at the Freetown High Court No. 1 today Friday where he and five other men are being tried on corruption charges in relation to the renovation of  Sierra Leone’s UN Chancery building in New York, United States.

Dr. Kamara who lost the June Presidential Election to incumbent President Julius Maada Bio resumes court attendance after the Presiding Judge   Adrian Fisher in May  postponed the trial to allow the politician to participate in the June 24 General Elections.

Sierra Leone central bank increases policy rate

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Sierra Leone has increased the Monetary Policy Rate by 0.50 percentage points, to 19.25 percent.

This was according to a statement issued after a meeting of the committee on the 6th of July this year to review recent macroeconomic and financial developments in the global and domestic environments and their implications for domestic inflation and growth.

Sierra Leone parliament re-elects Speaker

Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu has been reelected Speaker of Sierra Leone’s Parliament. He was elected on the 13th of July 2023 after going unopposed. 

Bundu won with a simple majority of ninety-two votes in his favour, whilst three voted against him. The Clerk of Parliament Umar Paran Tarawally who acted as Presiding Officer announced Bundu as the Speaker on the fourth round of voting.
