IMC warns against inciting reportage

Commissioner of the Independent Media Commission (IMC) Mustapha Sesay has sternly warned journalists against inciting reportage during the electioneering process that has the tendency to cause mayhem.  

Speaking on the 20th June 2023 at a training for journalists on electioneering reporting, Sesay ‘said ‘’IMC will not compromise with any media practitioner or institution that will cause insecurity during and after the elections’’.

Poll predicts Sierra Leone voting outcome

The Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) has in its Sierra Poll dated 14th June 2023 predicted the outcome of the June 24 elections this year.

The Poll explained that according to the interviews conducted, the Flagbearer of the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) President Julius Maada Bio is projected to win by 56%, which is slightly above the minimum threshold of 55% required to avoid a presidential runoff. 

Video claiming a child was beaten for putting on red t-shirt is “misleading”

Claim: A video posted on social media claimed that a child was beaten because she was wearing a red t-shirt.

Verdict: the claim is misleading; the child was not beaten because of wearing a red t-shirt.  

Methodology

To verify these claims, SLAJ/NDI SuperNewsRoom fact-checkers contacted the Sierra Leone Police and colleague journalists in Mile 19 in Tonkolili district, northern Sierra Leone.

Defence for children calls for positive digital service use

Defence for Children International (DCI) Sierra Leone, a local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO)   has called for an increased public education programmes including outreach to schools and communities to raise awareness on positive use of digital services and the dangers of cyber-crime.

The organisation made the recommendation in a press release i to mark the commemoration of the Day of the African Child (DAC) on the 16th June, this year.

ECOWAS to deploy 95 election observers to S/L

The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, has approved for the deployment of 95 Election Observers for the 24th of June multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone.

Some will perform Long-Term observation of the process while it will be short term for others.

The planned deployment was made known to the public through a press release by the Commission dated 15th June, 2023.
