SLAJ wants action for below-minimum-wage employees

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has called on the Independent Media Commission (IMC) to take appropriate action against media houses that pay below the minimum wage, according to the association’s Manifesto titled “The Media We Want”.

In his presentation on the 5th of June 2023 at the launch of the media manifesto, Lecturer Dr. Francis Sowa said that some journalists are paid below the minimum wage whilst others are not paid, insisting the IMC should enforce compliance by owners of media houses.

Women to get less than 30% of seats in next Sierra Leone Parliament – IGR survey reveals

The 30% minimum seats for female parliamentarians will not be achieved, according to Institution of Governance Reform’s (IGR) SierraPoll survey.

IGR’s Executive Director, Andrew Lavali on 31st May 2022 at the launch of the Sierra Poll said if necessary actions are not taken from now to the election date, the sixth parliament will get less than 30% women representation.  

Pancreatic cancer on the increase in Sierra Leone

Surgical Oncologist at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Issac Olufemi Smalle has said there is an increase of pancreatic cancer in Sierra Leone.

The doctor was speaking on the 31st May 2023 at Sierra Bay at an event held to commemorate World No Tobacco Day, with the theme “Grow food, not tobacco”.

Sierra Leone’s two main political parties trade accusations ahead of polls

The main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) and ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) have both accused each other of attacking their members in various parts of the country.

APC in a Press Release dated 1st June 2023 called on the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL), Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), the International Community and other stakeholders to intervene in what they alleged were the continuous attacks on their party members in the south by SLPP.

New App to educate Sierra Leoneans on new electoral system – IGR

The Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) has launched an application called Sense Bod App designed to educate citizens on the electoral system that will be used in the coming elections.

IGR’s Data Manager ,Alieu Gilbert Fullah on the 30th May 2023 explained that the app will educate the public not only on electoral system, manifestoes of the different political parties, numbers of polling centres across the country and districts, but how many votes can be translated into seats.

Marampa Mines Limited doles out Community Development Funds to Port Loko District

Community Development Committee (CDC) - a representative body working to ensure the equitable utilization of resources and the sustainable development of the chiefdoms of Marampa and Maforki in Port Loko district – has announced receipt of its Community Development Fund.

According to a press statement, the money was disbursed by Marampa Mines Limited (Ltd) and has been remitted into the committee’s Bank Account.
