PAC to collect 3.4 billion GST from over 20 businesses

The Chairman and members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament have decided to garnish the accounts of more than twenty businesses for Goods and Services Tax (GST) they owe the National Revenue Authority (NRA) totalling three billion four hundred million old Leones (3,400,000,000).

The MPs took this decision on the 12th August 2024 after representatives from these business institutions did not honour the committee’s summons.

News blackout, as Senegal media under fire

Several Media institutions in Senegal have ceased their daily publications following heavy taxation by the authorities, months after the government of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye was elected. 

 This situation has attracted the attention of the organisation Reporters Without Borders (RSF), whose director for sub-Saharan Africa, Sadibou Marong, has expressed his concerns and called for an urgent dialogue between the media and public authorities.

Bio calls for Security Council reforms

President Julius Maada Bio has called for Reforms during a debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on issues around maintaining International Peace and Security, addressing Historical Injustices, and enhancing Africa’s Effective Representation.

Addressing Council members on the 12th of August 2024, President Bio recalled that nearly 80 years after its creation, the Council has been stuck in time and that “the imperative for reform is irrefutable.”

NaYCom Head south, wants more help for trainees

The Regional Coordinator National Youth Commission South, Ibrahim S. Kabba has appealed for more support from interested parties so that more young people would be given life-changing skills training.

 ‘’ In December of 2022, we certified 270 youths in different skills, notably in operating heavy machines, masonry, nursing and other professions’’,Kabba explained to Kakua Express.

 He said a good number of those certified have gained employment at the district and city councils as well as in the private sector.

Sierra Leone Court Martial convicts 24 soldiers, acquits 1

A court-martial in Freetown has convicted 24 out of 25 soldiers on conspiracy to commit mutiny, mutiny, murder and other related military offences arising from an attempt to overthrow the government of President Julius Maada Bio in November 2023.

 19th accused, Warrant Officer Class One Sitta Dumbuya was acquitted and discharged on four counts.

 The president of the Court Martial, Navy Captain Colonel Lawrence Jabati said all six members of the board approved the verdict.
