Sierra Leone indicts former parliamentarian over corruption

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has indicted former lawmaker, Kombor Kamara, over alleged misappropriation of public funds.

Kamara, who represented Constituency 056, which is now Constituency 074 (following the pre-2018 general elections boundary delimitation exercise), allegedly misappropriated the sum of Le1.3 billion.

He was indicted alongside Councilor Saidu Abass Kamara of Ward 246 in the same Constituency located in the Port Loko District, but on unrelated charges.

Ambulances reduce maternal & infant deaths in eastern Sierra Leone - says Kenema maternal health chief

The Focal person for maternal health in Kenema, Mabel Musu Farma has told Politico that the ambulances donated to the hospital have prevented some more maternal and infant deaths in the district.

“With the advent of the ambulance service there is much improvement in maternal deaths in Kenema district because before the ambulance service we used to get maternal deaths up to sixty cases in a year” she said.

3,000 graduate from the University of Sierra Leone

The University of Sierra Leone (USL) has conferred degree and academic awards on over 3,000 students for the 2018/2019 academic year.

The ceremony with the theme “Education towards Entrepreneurship” took place on Saturday 22 February at the National Stadium in Freetown.

The graduands were from all three constituent colleges – Fourah Bay College (FBC), Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) and College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS).

License plate manufacturers in Sierra Leone halt production

Three local companies that manufacture vehicle license plates have halted production as protest against government’s decision to award the contract to a company known as Autospect.

The three companies, Bilhaq Trading, Sarah Trading Company (STC) and International Association Services (IAS) announced their decision at a joint press conference on Thursday.

According to the companies the Ministry of Transport awarded the contract to produce the number plates to Autospect without opening any bidding process.

US based band to train 20 performers in Sierra Leone

The United States Embassy in Sierra Leone has announced that US based musical band, Nelly’s Echo will train 20 young people in musical composition and performance.

The Baltimore based group is expected to arrive in Sierra Leone in the first week of March, as part of their tour in West Africa.

The group will work in collaboration with popular music school in Sierra Leone, Ballanta Academy of Music.
