Sierra Leone to expand Biometric registration

The Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS), in collaboration with its partners, are set to introduce a biometric registration for inmates in the provincial parts of the country.

In a meeting with the Director General of the Correctional Services in Freetown, Rita Wright, Director of Admin and Operations at Fix Solution, said that the project was ready to be implemented in Waterloo, Port Loko, Kenema, Makeni, Sefagu, and Bo Correctional centers.

Development Ministry engages MDA’s on public investment policy

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) has ended a consultative meeting with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and its development partners in order to discuss the Zero Draft National Public Investment Policy (NPIMP).

The consultative meeting took place on Tuesday at the Ministry’s headquarters in Freetown. 

45 Sierra Leonean youths get training in embroidery

Forty-five youths have been trained in dress making and embroidery. The beneficiaries - 26 women and 19 men - were trained as part of a program supported by the Government of Sierra Leone and Hunan University in China.

Over environmental degradation, Green Scenery blames Gov’t

The environmental advocacy group, Green Scenery, has blamed the government for the current state of environmental degradation in the country.

The organization, in a statement, called on the government to put a ban on logging to protect the country’s environment after recent reports of escalation of indiscriminate logging.

Sierra Leone police commander accused of selling police land

A row has broken out in the leadership of the Sierra Leone Police in the southern region over the alleged sale of a piece of land belonging to the force.

The Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Jendema Division in Pujehun District, Chief Superintendent (CSP) Edward Yamba, is accused of selling the plot of land which is located within the Jendema Police quarters to a private businessman.

The head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Mano River Division, Guy Patrick Chico Lansana Bussu, raised the alarm.

Sierra Leone to expand school feeding program

The Government of Sierra Leone is set to expand the school feeding program with the addition of more districts to those which currently benefit from the scheme.

The program, which is a key component of the government’s flagship Free Quality Education (FQE) scheme, has been boosted by a consignment of Chinese donated rice presented to the government last week.

The rice was presented through the Ministry of Agriculture by the Chinese government, for onward submission to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education.

Sierra Leone: Govt doles out Le 46 million to people living with disabilities

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) has given the sum of Le46 million to individuals and disability organizations as support to their programs and well-being.

In a ceremony held last week at the commission’s headquarters in Freetown, officials distributed cheques to three disabled people and three organizations run by disabled people.
