US$33 million windfall to boost SMEs in Sierra Leone

The African Guarantee Fund (AGF) has received the sum of USD33 Million to support Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) across Africa. They announced this in a press release on Thursday.

The organization which focuses on providing financial guarantees for over ten thousand (10,000) SMEs is a Kenyan based NGO which seeks to empower business startups across the continent.

Sierra Leone President sacks Labour Minister Timbo over distribution of Chinese donated rice

Minister of Labour Alpha Timbo and Deputy Minister of Education, Emilia Gogra have been sacked and subjected to investigation over their handling of a school feeding programme.

A statement from the presidency on Friday listed the duo alongside two other top officials in the Education Ministry - Charles Kamanda, Permanent Secretary and Mamusu Massaquoi, Director of Nutrition – who are being investigated for their role in how they handled a “huge” consignment of rice that was donated by the Chinese government.

Courts slams injunction on Sierra Leone's APC convention

A High Court judge has slammed a temporary injunction on a mini convention of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) slated for this weekend.

Members of the National Reformation Movement (NRM), a pressure seeking reforms within the party, filed for the injunction to halt to meeting scheduled to take place in Port Loko from January 10 to 12, citing constitutional breaches.

Sierra Leone women leaders hail Bio’s position on women

The leadership of the women’s rights advocacy group, 50/50, has hailed President Julius Maada Bio for his stance on women and girls’ empowerment.

The group which paid a courtesy call on the President on Wednesday also praised the president’s policies aimed at protecting women and girls, according to a news dispatch from State House.

50/50 is a non-partisan organization which campaigns for increased political participation and equal representation of women in decision-making processes.

Students accuse Police of brutality during Limkokwing protest

Students of Limkokwing College have blasted the Sierra Leone Police over how they handled their protest on Tuesday. Students accused the Police of manhandling male and female students in the course of arresting them “unlawfully”.

On Tuesday students of the college converged at their Hill Station campus and marched in what seemed like a peaceful protest to the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education at New England Ville.
