Sierra Leone drivers’ union decries “exploitation” by roads safety authority

The umbrella body of motorists in Sierra Leone has complained of exploitation of its members in the hands of staff of the Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority (SLRSA) in the course of acquiring driving license.

The Sierra Leone Motor Drivers and General Transport Workers Union (SLMDGTWU) said it has received several reports from drivers complaining of extortion by SLRSA staff when they go to either apply for or renew their licenses.

84% of Sierra Leone children can’t read - Statistician General

Statistician General Professor Osman Sankoh has lamented the seriously low rate of reading among children in Sierra Leone, which he says holds a bleak future for the country if action is not taken to bridge the gap.

Prof. Sankoh, the Chief Executive Officer of Statistics Sierra Leone (Stat SL), made the statement during the launch of the first ever National Book Fair in the country, where he said 84% of children in the country couldn’t read a short story, referencing the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) of 2017.

High expectations for businesses as value of US dollar drops in Sierra Leone

Some business people have expressed optimism over the fall in the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Leone, Sierra Leone’s legal tender.

For the first time in many months, the exchange rate of the Dollar to the Leone has dropped to below Le1million. As of Friday, December 6, a 100 US Dollar was buying at Le990, 000 and selling at Le1million, in the Black Market.

Sierra Leone's former president hosts Horasis chairman

Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma has again been invited to attend the 2020 Horasis Global Meeting, his office announced last week.

President Koroma received the invitation in person from the chairman of the annual global business confab, Dr. Frank-Jurgen Richter, who visited Sierra Leone as part of an Africa tour, according to a statement issued by the Office of the former President. It said Dr Richter was received by President Koroma at his private residence in the northern town of Makeni.

Sierra Leone journalists association meets President Bio

The Executive of Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) on Wednesday met with President Julius Maada Bio for the first time since their election into office last July.

The meeting held at State House provided a platform for the SLAJ leadership to thank the President for his government’s effort to repeal the obnoxious criminal libel law.
