Political parties appeal for electoral reforms

Opposition political parties in Sierra Leone have renewed calls for electoral reforms, amidst efforts to resolve rising political tensions in the country.

The latest appeal was made during a meeting between representatives of the country’s top political parties and the head of the government’s bench in Parliament, Hon. Sidi M. Tunis.

Le 33.4 Billion paid to former Govt officials

The Sierra Leone government has announced the disbursement of Le33.4billion as part payment of retirement benefits for ex-officials who served in the administration of former President Ernest Bai Koroma.

The government in a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance said the money meant for the former president, his vice president and cabinet ministers, among others, represents 50 percent of what they are owed as end of service benefits and gratuities.

Former Sierra Leone president's brother named in $700,000 NATCOM consultancy

A new inquiry into the Ministry of Information by the Commissions of Inquiry (COI) has shown that the brother of former President Ernest bai Koroma received $700,000 on behalf of his company to do consultancy work in the construction of NATCOM Head Quarters at Southridge, Hill Station.

Thomas Koroma, owner of TS and Company, bided for the consultancy and was exclusively introduced to the then Director General of NATCOM, Mohamed Bangura by Frank Manja, a board member.

Mudslide victims receive grants from UN Women

Two years after the 2017 mudslide and flood disaster, 129 women have received Le1million direct cash support from the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women. The money is meant to support the women to do business and improve their economic condition.

The 2017 mudslide left hundreds of people dead and many more in extreme poverty. Most of them are women and children. The cash transfer comes at a time when the country is going through stiff economic situation.
