Paramount Chief dies of heart attack

The Paramount Chief of Barri Chiefdom in Pujehun District, Vandi Kong Magona, has died of a heart attack. He reportedly fell ill last weekend when family members decided to rush him to the Bo Government Hospital in the regional capital, Bo.

The late chief is said to have fallen sick earlier and was hospitalized at the same Bo Government Hospital when his condition got improved. He was then moved to his home in Potoru, where the latest attack occurred.

President Koroma compensated former minister with state land, COI hears

Investigations by William Annan Atuguba Commission have shown that Former President Ernest Bai Koroma compensated former Minister of Government Alhaji Ibrahim Kemoh Sesay with a state land during his regime.

The state land in question belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) and it was meant for nursery purposes.  

Sierra Leone among 41 countries in need of food aid

Serra Leone is among 41 countries in the world which still need external assistance for food, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has said in a new report.

The Crop Prospects and Food Situation report released last Thursday points at conflicts and dry weather conditions as the primary causes of high levels of severe food insecurity which has hampered food availability and access for millions of people across these countries.

Sierra Leone police overhauling its checkpoint system nationwide

The Sierra Leone Police says it has put in motion a project designed to overhaul its checkpoint system across the country, with the goal of strengthening national security while preventing corruption within the force.

The project entails the reintroduction of checkpoints in locations where they had been removed and construction of standard facilities in all checkpoints nationwide. Every checkpoint will have attached to it a detention facility to keep suspected criminals, according to a spokesman for the Police force.

Fishermen threaten strike action

Fishing boat owners have threatened to embark on a strike action against a new license policy proposed by the government.

The proposed fee of Le1.5million is expected to be paid by every boat owner annually.

License fee collectors have already been deployed at various fishing communities to start the collection. Since the year is midway gone, the fishermen said the government has asked them to pay only Le 500, 000 for 2019. And they have until the end of this month to complete the payment.
