SLPP reassures quarantined homes

Executive of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) of Constituency 103 in Kissy, eastern Freetown has donated chlorine, food and cooking items to homes undergoing the Ebola 21-day quarantine period. 

SLAJ condemns IMC appointments

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists has condemned the recent presidential appointment of a new Chairman of the Independent Media Commission “without seeking the ‘advice of SLAJ’ as provided for in Section 4(1) of the IMC Act, 2000 as amended, which says: ‘The President shall appoint the Chairman and Commissioners of the IMC acting on the advice of SLAJ’” the association states in a statement.

SLAJ had previously in a general meeting condemned the appointments of two commissioners for the same reason.

SLAJ welcomes criminal defamation ruling

The African Court on Human and People’s Rights has ruled that jailing people on criminal defamation is a violation of the right to free expression, a move that has been welcomed by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).

The ruling was made on Friday 5 December in a case of journalist ‘Konaté v Burkina Faso’ saying that imprisonment for defamation violates the right to freedom of expression and that criminal defamation laws should only be used in restricted circumstances.

35-year-old beaten to death in Pujehun

Police in Pujehun have confirmed the death of 35-year-old Sheku Conteh at Bandajuma in Barri chiefdom 36 miles to the Malema division headquarter at Jendema.

Speaking to Politico the detective crime officer attached to the division, Inspector Ibrahim Steven Bangura said the incident took place on the evening of the 7 December following a fight between the decease and 37-year-old Ibrahim Bao.

He said the deceased was beaten into a coma and later taken to the community health centre for treatment but could not survive.

The Mayor of Kenema yesterday told Paramount Chiefs from the Eastern Region that Ebola infection had reduced to zero in the district saying ‘’Kenema District is free from Ebola’’

Joseph Samba Keifala was giving a welcome address during the launch of US$ 1.2 project to support Paramount Chiefs and tribal headmen to implement activities leading to the eradication of Ebola.

US$ 99 million for Ebola fight in Sierra Leone

Parliament on Tuesday ratified a financial grant agreement of over $ 99 million between Sierra Leone and the International Development Association (IDA) scale up response against the Ebola in the country.

Speaking in parliament, finance minister, Dr. Kaifala Marah, explained the grant of US$ 99, 450,000 followed an appeal made by President Ernest Koroma for urgent assistance to end the Ebola outbreak in the country.
