The Government of Sierra Leone has signed a $50 Million Soft Loan Agreement with Saudi Fund for Development for the construction of an ultra -modern referral hospital in Lungi.
The agreement was signed by the Deputy Minister of Finance 1, Jeneba Kpaka Bangura in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the 9th November, 2023.
The soft loan agreement aims to build and equip a 150-bed hospital close to the Airport in Lungi, in the Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, Port Loko District. The hospital project is part of the Government’s plans to provide high-quality health and medical care services for the people of Sierra Leone.
The hospital which is expected to be completed in 2025 will have units such as general surgery, with the necessary operating rooms, emergency wards, pediatrics, in-patient wards, obstetrics and gynecology, nursery and technical and administrative support units, among others.
The Government has this year identified the parcel of land in Lungi for the construction of the hospital to be named the ‘Riyadh Referral Hospital’. Its completion will be critical to the overall government priority to increase access to good health services, which is part of President Julius Maada Bio’s Human Capital Development programme.
It could be recalled that on the 18th May, 2023, the Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Finance, agreed with the Saudi Development Fund to finance the construction of the health facility.
