Chief Immigration Officer, Abu Kanneh has provided Fourteen University Students from Pujehun District with Scholarships to help ease the challenges they encounter as they pursue their studies.
The event held at the Youth Council Centre in Pujehun town was witnessed by the student–recipients, their family members and local community leaders.
According to persons linked to the scholarship programme, the initiative is to encourage students with academic potential and prospects, who face financial challenges to continue their courses.
They said the selection process for the scholarship programme was rigorous but transparent which saw students submitting academic records, personal statements, and letters of recommendation.
They also stated that the initiative was a manifestation of Kanneh’s recognition of the importance of education and empowering deserving young people hailing from Pujehun District to pursue their dreams.
A six man committee, led by Dr. Isaac Massaquoi, an indigene of Pujehun reviewed the applications and shortlisted the most deserving candidates based on their academic achievements, financial needs, and potential for future success.
In his statement to the gathering, Chief Immigration Officer Kanneh highlighted the important role education plays in transforming lives and communities. He said it was on that basis he undertook the initiative to support young people encountering impediments as they strive to pursue university education.
Local leaders including the district Mamie Queen commended Kanneh for his commitment to education and his efforts in supporting the youth of Pujehun district.
The beneficiaries spoke highly of their benefactor who they said stepped in at a critical moment in their academic life, and thanked him for the gesture. They promised to attach the utmost seriousness to their studies to live to what’s expected of them.
Family members of the students expressed gratitude to Kanneh whose intervention they said is critical in the overall academic life of their children. They said a huge burden has been lifted off their shoulders and promised to keep monitoring their children to make sure they lived up to expectations.
The students were drawn from various universities in the country.
