Women’s League Board condemns attack on female referee

The Women’s Premier League Board has strongly condemned an attack on a female referee during a match in the ongoing Women’s Premier League.

The attack occurred in the match between F.C Kallon and  Mogbwemo Queens at the Angola Field, Western Rural on the 9th February, 2024.

A press release issued by the Board indicated that its attention has been drawn to the game that was clamored with violence instigated and perpetrated by supporters and officials of one of the clubs.

It further informed the public that allegations of violence will be taken seriously and will exercise all powers available within its jurisdiction to bring the culprits to justice once investigation was concluded.

The board condemned any form of violence, and promised to take steps to address the said event whilst also encouraging the players, referees, commissioners and coordinators who have been subjected to violence to report to the relevant authorities for investigation.

It promised to increase security personnel in each match venue in order to protect the game, clubs and their officials from violence perpetrated by club supporters. 

Also, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) released a statement on the 10th February, 2024 saying it was appalled at the attack on the referee.

It noted that the incident which saw fans attacking the referee is utterly unacceptable and goes against the fundamental principles of fair play and respect. SLFA asked that the female premier league board launch a comprehensive investigation into the matter and ensure that all individuals involved in the attack are identified and held accountable.

The football association extended its solidarity and support to the referee who was subjected to the violence and expressed its willingness to collaborate with the board and relevant authorities to implement measures aimed at preventing such incidents from occurring in the future.
