Member of Parliament for constituency 110, Chernor Maju Bah, over the weekend donated over Le 50 Million in cash, 250 bags of cement and 70 bundles of zinc, among other things to victims of a fire incident at Tengbeh town, in Freetown.
Bah, who is also the Deputy Speaker of parliament, explained that he was not making the donation for his party All People's Congress, but as a Member of Parliament representing everybody in his constituency irrespective of party affiliations.
He said that since the fire incident happened on February 13 this year, destroying about three houses, “I have been moving up and down searching for funds to help the victims and I was able to convince some of my friends who provided the aforementioned money and items”.
He appreciated the efforts of the ward councillor and other stakeholders "for not only mobilising the people but for making the donation exercise a success". He also commended the victims for their patience with him.
He said the donation was made possible by people and institutions including Tunde Cole of the National Petroleum, Lebanese businessman Hisham Mackie, Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, Ibrahim Bazzy & Sons, Moseray Fadika, Jamal Shallop, Guarantee Trust Bank, SSGI and Sierra Minerals (Vimeto), whiles Sierra Rutile and Cape Lambart were pending, he said.
The MP took time to distribute the Le 50 Million cash to 55 school children whose education was affected by the incident. “I am giving out the sum of Le500, 000 to tertiary students, Le300, 000 to Secondary school pupils and Le200, 000 to primary school pupils [each]”.
He noted that he had decided to do a cash donation to the pupils so as to refund the school fees their parents had already paid and to help the parents get more goods for their children.
Councillor Sufian Turay of Ward 388, explain that he always had the conviction that such a donation was forthcoming “because the MP has a passion for the people of Tengbeh Town”.
A beneficiary Fatmata Kamara, thanked the MP for the donation.
