Sierra Leone Premier League Review – Week 12

Hurray! Lions are champions

So East End Lions were crowned last night following their 0-0 draw with rivals, Mighty Blackpool. They finish the season unbeaten. 24 games, 11 draws, 13 wins, 0 loss; that’s their stats.

Last night’s ceremony though, was chaotic because the Premier League Board was not ready to give out the trophy on the night. But what can you say, its Lions’ trophy, they have won it and they should get it whenever and wherever they want.

Take that away, this has been a remarkable season for Lions.

For rivals Blackpool, it is nothing short of a disaster. They are 5th with a game in hand against RSLAF. If they win, they could end up being 3rd. But ignore their position for once and look at the point margin between them and FC Kallon and Mighty Blackpool respectively.

Even in the best scenario if Blackpool wins, they will have 36 points. This is a 10-point difference between them and second place FC Kallon and 14 points between them and champions, Lions. The point margin shows how far Blackpool are from these two teams. They need a deep revival.

Kono chase Kenema out

So, the last game of the season in the provinces was the Eastern region derby; Diamond Stars v Kamboi Eagles. The game couldn’t end because violence disrupted it. Accounts from Kono suggests that fans of Diamond Stars chased Kamboi Eagles players out of the pitch. We cannot independently verify these accounts.

However, we saw pictures of a damaged team bus and some wounded Kamboi Eagles’ players caused by the violence.

So, at the end of the league once again we should have a conversation about hooliganism in our football. The game between these two sides in Kenema was as ugly as this game in Kono. Instead of football, violence took center stage in both matches.

How a good football atmosphere degenerates into such an ugly spectacle, is a question the next Premier League board will have to deal with.

Before the interruption the game was 1-1

Violence aside, Kamboi Eagles have had a remarkable season. There are plans to put proper structures within the club. That is a great step forward. They finish 3rd with 35 points.

However, Blackpool might overtake them if they win their game in hand against RSLAF at a later date.

Diamond Stars were on a revival during this second leg but that has suddenly halted. They finish 10th with 26 points. They should be worried. This is not the performance of a former Champion.

Bo Rangers end on a low

Zero defeats in nine games and they end with two defeats in two. This is the story of Bo Rangers, they finally finish in the relegation zone. Something that they have dreaded all season.

Their league position is an irony to all the progress they have achieved under their newfound coach, Junior Konneh.

But the future is bright. They have a lot of time to do the right recruitment and get this team to where they want it. They finish 11th with 25 points.

For FC Kallon, the win against Bo Rangers on Saturday marked their first win in four matches. This shows how much work they must do next season. They lost the league this season by a fine margin; four points.

If they have learnt their lessons, we will see something new from them next season. They finish 2nd with 46 points.
