By Septimus Senessie in Kono

The Kono district office of the National Electoral Commission over the weekend publicly incinerated used election materials at their former office at Old Yengema Road in Koidu at a symbolic ceremony said to mark the beginning of the 2012 general elections in the district.

Speaking to Politico at the ceremony, the NEC District Returning Officer for Kono, Momoh Kanneh said the commission decided to burn the materials because they were no longer of use to the commission. He said they had decided to publicly destroy the materials “to show to the general public the credibility of the commission”.

The materials destroyed he said were those used for the 2007 general elections, the 2008 local coucil elections, the four paramount chief elections, and the district council bye-election in the district. Kanneh described the destroyed materials as “absolute” and “sensitive and non-sensitive materials” which were destroyed to mark the beginning of another general elections to give space to the new materials.

He said that they were well prepared for the November polls and also expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of political parties in the first week of the campaigning in the district.
