Leone Stars suffered a 4-0 defeat in their friendly match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the FMB stadium. It was not just the score line but the performance that Leone Stars put up that has sparked angry reactions back home. It’s the worst ever performance by our national team many could recall in recent times. The team was disjointed, lacked energy, and commitment, in every aspect of the game.
Not a single player gave any meaningful account throughout the match and they should all take collective responsibility for what was a disgraceful performance that left fans wondering if this was not the beginning of Leone Stars decline.
Coach John Keister should sort his team selection and try to build a steady side that could be relied on for the next 5 years. The present team has players with tired legs, men who have stayed for far too long in the team and have very little to offer now, yet he cannot resist calling them up.
It was an awful display that has angered fans at home and a worrying sign, with major Nations Cup qualification matches ahead.
Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) President, Thomas Daddy Brima immediately took to twitter after the match saying the FA should take the blame.
He said they could have called off the match citing challenges in getting South African visa on arrival.
He said it was a friendly encounter ‘meant to expose the weaknesses and strengths of the team, but admitted they were unhappy over the loss and promised they would correct the mistakes.
