UN engages MPs on good governance

A ten-member delegation from the United Nations peacebuilding fund, headed by envoy Egvi Llermo Rychinski has engaged the leadership of Parliament on information-sharing and the process of UN support to the country on good governance.

Speaker of the House, Justice Abel Stronge thanked the envoy to Sierra Leone and informed its members about the setup of parliament and the challenges they faced in executing their functions.

Deputy Speaker, Chernor Maju Bah recalled some of the contributions made by International Organisation on Migration through the UN peacebuilding fund and the consequent recruitment of the staff of parliament.

Opposition MP and minority leader in parliament, Dr. Bernadette Lahai raised the issue of gender inclusion in the country’s politics, citing the 30% quota for women’s participation in elective positions as very important to addressing gender exclusion.

Clerk of Parliament, Ibrahim Sesay commended the visit by the UN family pointing out their support to parliament and the country in general, while calling for more capacity building for parliamentarians.

Head of the delegation and chair of the special configuration of the peacebuilding fund, Egvi Llermo Rychinski, said they had always wanted to see the operations of the UN system in the country succeed, thus engaging stakeholders in promoting good governance in the country which he described as imperative.

He assured of their continued support to promoting good governance in the country.
