Two women in Bo putting the techniques into use as they weave plastics here to produce table mats
In an effort to reduce plastic waste within the Bo municipality and its immediate environs, an international nongovernmental organisation, Welthungerhilfe (WWH) has engendered collaboration between the southern provincial city of Bo and Makeni in the north.
Sponsored by the British Department for International Development (DfID), WHH is doing this under its "Support to Bo waste management" project which sponsors private individuals in the production of plastic tiles in Bo.
The plastic tiles initiative was born out of a strong partnership between Bo and Makeni.
In May WHH sent a team including its Waste Technician, Alfred Maada Fobay to Makeni to get full training in the plastic tiles production.
After a week-long vigorous training the WHH/BCC team was certified by the trainers and they returned to Bo to implement the skills they had learnt in Makeni, culminating in the team embarking on the production of plastic tiles in the country's second city.
This venture is expected to greatly reduce plastic waste in Bo and its environs and it is envisaged that it will even capture other areas like Kenema for the plastics needed to produce the tiles.
Meanwhile, a team of women from Makeni's OIC was in Bo recently to train interested women in Bo on plastic weaving techniques.
They trained women in weaving plastics to make handbags, purses and table mats among others. The trainees were later issued with certificate by the Mayor of Bo, Harold Logie Tucker at the WAGA center.
