Diamond Stars and RSLAF fail to impress

By Kemoh Sesay

Sierra Leon's two representatives to the CAF tournaments Diamond Stars and RSLAF have lost their opening matches. Diamond Stars were thrashed 6-0 away Raja Casablanca of Morocco the champions league while RSLAF were defeated at home soil by Gamtel of Gambia 1-0 in the CAF confederation cup.

The second legs of both matches are due next week.

Diamond Stars coach Derick Boison said his boys "played well in the entire match but we lost because of defensive blunders". Boison said "the result has put them on a slim chance to go through to the next stage".

Asked whether the second leg was not just about fulfilling CAF requirements, Boison replied: "we are going to play our normal football and see what happen next".

Diamond Stars suffered a heavy defeat in their first appearance in the tournament at the hands of AFAD of Ivory Coast last year.

RSLAF coach Ibrahim Tombo Bangura said he was disappointment over their loss from a goal scored in the dying minutes of the game. He said "we had all the chances to defeat Gamtel but all were wasted because the boys are new in this competition and most of them need to learn more...we are going to work on it and play a different match in Banjul"
