The chairman of the opposition All People’s Congress, APC has told a magistrate in Freetown that doctors were still assessing the condition of former president Ernest Bai Koroma who was granted bail to travel to Nigeria six weeks ago for medical examination and treatment.
Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray, who is standing as surety for the former president who is accused of treason, said efforts were made to get Ernest Bai Koroma’s medical report “but due to some medical procedures we could not get it”.
Earlier lawyer, Fitzgerald Kamara, representing the former president apologized to the court for the absence of his client noting that the reasons were contained in an affidavit, which, according to him, had been served on the prosecution.
State prosecutor, Ahmed J.M. Bockarie reminded the court of how the accused applied for medical leave from the High Court but had failed to appear as directed. He said lawyers for the former president had assured that he would be in court at any time.
Magistrate Santigie Bangura ordered that a medical report on the health status of the accused be brought to court on the 27th March 2024.
Former president Koroma served Sierra Leone from November 2007 to April 2018.
