Guinea recaptures ex-junta leader freed after a prison break

  • Cpt Dadis Camara

Former Guinean Junta Leader Captain Dadis Camara and several of his compatriots have been recaptured after they were freed from a Prison in the capital Conakry early Saturday morning amidst a barrage of gunfire, a reliable source in the city told Politico.

The source said Camara and one other prisoner were later cornered during which there was a heavy exchange of gunfire and  Camara and the other  eventually got captured.

It’s been reported that the soldier son of Camara’s close confidante Colonel Claude Pivi detained alongside him led the assault on the prison. Up to Press time, Col. Pivi was still at large. Another of the escapees voluntarily turned himself into the Prison Guards, according to our source, who could not confirm how many of the ex-junta leaders freed from the prison are still at large.

Camara who returned to Guinea in September 2022 from exile in Burkina Faso, was together with ten other officials in his administration detained by the present military Government over the alleged gruesome killing of over one hundred people mostly women, with many more raped following a peaceful demonstration on the 28th September 2009 when he was in power. Camara, Pivi and the others have all denied charges levied against them over the chilling events that unfolded at the stadium in Conakry.

Camara took power in a coup in 2008 after long-serving Head of State General Lansana Conte died. Camara’s short-lived regime was characterised by widespread accusations of human rights violations and was ousted in 2009, though he survived an attempt on his life after he was shot in the head.

Calm has returned to Guinea though the country’s borders remained closed up to press time.
