Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education (MOICE) Yusuf Keketoma Sandi has expressed his desire for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC) to be the centre of broadcasting transformation in the country, therefore calling on China’s Hunan Broadcasting to support the state broadcaster in its transformation drive.
“It is our desire that Hunan Broadcasting will support SLBC on digital migration, infrastructure development, exchange programmes, and capacity building. We want the SLBC to be at the center of the broadcasting transformation in our country” Sandi said.
Whilst addressing the delegation from Hunan Broadcasting System on the 25th of September 2023, Minister Sandi called for strong Cooperation between China’s Hunan Broadcasting System and SLBC.
He told the visitors that since President Julius Maada Bio took office in 2018, Sierra Leone and China have enjoyed a beautiful relationship underpinned by the investment of Chinese companies in various sectors including mining. Sandi thanked the Hunan Broadcasting team for choosing Sierra Leone, emphasising that China and Sierra Leone have a rich history of cooperation.
He stated that he and the Minister are committed to transforming the national broadcasting corporation.
The Director General of Hunan Broadcasting System He Hui expressed their intention to work with the SLBC, adding that they visited Sierra Leone to explore investment and partnership opportunities.
Hui gave a brief history of Hunan Broadcasting and its partnerships with other countries. He also invited the Ministry to visit their place, “I would like to invite you, Minister, and your team, to Hunan Province for a first-hand experience on the operations and capacity of Hunan Broadcasting,” the Director General stated.
Members of the Hunan Broadcasting delegation are expected to visit the SLBC complex and undertake a tour of the facilities.
The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation is the country’s national broadcaster. According to many, despite being the first English broadcaster in West Africa, it is not the leading broadcaster even in the country largely due to many challenges.
