Leone Stars impressive against the Desert Foxes

By Alpha Abu

Sierra Leone’s National Football Team, Leone Stars opened their campaign at the AfCON tournament in Cameroon by holding the defending champions Algeria’s Desert Foxes to a goal- less draw in the first match of Tuesday 11th January, 2022. It was a duel Leone Stars never looked out of sorts as they took the game to their opponents. They showed more creativity and composure going forward but threw away all their well- crafted chances. Striker Alhaji Kamara (Adriano) wasted a handful of chances. But the two most outstanding players were Goalkeeper Mohamed N. Kamara and Defender Steven Caulker who was representing Sierra Leone for the first time in an international competition.  It was no surprise that at the end of the game, the goalie got the Man of the Match award.

Some fans back home expressed concern over Coach John Keister’s decision to introduce two players with few minutes of play left, when the Algerians had  brought in 5 fresh players in the final third quarter of play. Sierra Leone will play Ivory Coast in their next match on Sunday 16th January 2022.
