Man remanded for alleged scholarship scam

One Abdulai Turay, a resident of Kandeh town in Bo city has been remanded in custody for allegedly collecting money from eight people on diverse dates on the pretext of facilitating their postgraduate scholarship programmes at Njala University in Freetown and abroad.

The 29 year old was in court on Monday 22nd May 2023 to answer to 13 counts of impersonation and collecting money by false pretences.

One3e of his alleged victims is Halaimatu Sillah from whom the accused is alleged to have collected NLe 20,000 on 21st November last year at the Lumley-Aberdeen Beach area in Freetown after claiming to be a lecturer at Njala University, Bo campus.

It is also alleged that between the 2nd of December 2022 and the 6th of January this year, he collected NLe 5,000 from the same complainant on the same promise of facilitating her postgraduate scholarship at the Njala Henry Street campus in Freetown. Also, between the 3rd December 2022 and 21st January 2023, he allegedly collected NLe 5, 000 from Eleen Paulina Sowa by falsely pretending to facilitate her postgraduate scholarship programmes at the same university.

Between 25th December 2022 and 21st January this year, the accused collected another NLe 5,000 from both Jamilatu Sillah and Fatmata Sesay between 27th November and 10th February this year for the same scholarship program.

The accused is also alleged to have on the 3rd of April 2023, collected NLe 14,574 from Francis Morlai Lincoln at 3 Robert Lane Kossoh Town promising to facilitate his postgraduate scholarship programmes.  

All the cases are contained in three files representing monies collected from several people.

The case was adjourned to 30th May this year.
