MP complains about mining companies

  • Mustapha M Sellu, MP

By Nasratu Kargbo

Two small-scale mining companies in Moyamba District have been creating problems for residents in the community, according to the MP in that locality Mustapha Musu Sellu.

Sellu on 12th March 2024 told Parliament that the activities undertaken by F.S Mining and Shunda Ore have been affecting his people. He said F.S. Mining has about eight 40-foot trailers that are plying that route, raising dust which is not good for the people’s health.

He stated that according to the Environmental Health Impact Assessment, the company was to do dust suppression as a way of mitigating its hazardous effects, which the company has not done.

The MP read a section in the Mines and Minerals Development Act that explains how not to make the environment hazardous and prevent endangering stock, crops, and the community.  “As per this Act, they are in contravention of this particular section I have just read”, Sellu said.

He said that he has tried to locate the office of FS Mining but has not been able to do so.

Sellu also spoke about Shunda Ore Company the company recently had two of its trailers block the main road, resulting in motorists being diverted to rather dangerous routes.

He also noted other challenges that his people have faced and continue to face but admitted not to have made any formal complaint in that regard.

The MP said he has exhausted all avenues to salvage the situation, saying he has spoken to the Chair of Mines Committee in parliament and the National Mineral Agencies but that none showed any willingness to help.

The Leader of Government Business Mathew S. Nyuma advised Sellu to approach the Chairman of the Mines Committee and present a formal complaint.

Nyuma said parliament has structures and that the MP should have informed the Environment Committee, the Leader of Government Business, the Deputy Speaker, and the Speaker. The MP said parliament as an arm of government is strong in its oversight functions with enormous powers.

At this point, Acting Speaker of Parliament Segepoh Solomon Thomas advised: “Do a formal complaint on behalf of your people to the mines and environment committees”.  Thomas promised to ensure the chairpersons of the two committees summon or conduct an investigation on the companies mentioned, and then report to parliament.
