Resurgent Diamond Stars target title win

  • Coach Aiah Lebbie

By Mohamed Jaward Nyallay

Diamond Stars coach, Aiah Lebbie, has said that they were now in a position to put up a challenge for the Sierra Leone Premier League title this season.

On Wednesday, a buoyant Lebbie told journalists at a postmatch press conference that his team’s winning run was a sign that they were ready for the chase.

“Why not? You have been seeing it now. Diamond Stars is coming. I am working to win the trophy. Winning the trophy isn’t a strange thing for me. I was the assistant coach when we won it back to back,” he said.

Diamond Stars were the defending champions for two seasons in a row before the league was halted in 2014. Following the revival of the league last season, they finished 10th with 26 points, just four points off the relegation zone.

Lebbie’s newfound confidence came after his team defeated East End Tigers on Wednesday to make it three wins in a row. Their winning run includes beating FC Kallon and FC Johansen in Koidu before their victory on Wednesday.

Before their hattrick of wins, they had only won two out of their first ten games.

For a team that was plunged into crisis after their poor form and the sudden resignation of its coach, Francis Zapa Koroma, these series of wins couldn’t have come at a better time.

On Wednesday, they were 2nd in the league table after that win.

They have now completed their first round of games.

The league is expected to go for a short break where teams will be allowed to strengthen their sides with new recruits.
