The Public Relations Officer (PRO) at Njala University, Ralph Simeon Sesay, says the decision to rusticate dozens of students from the institution was based on the evidence presented by the university’s task force after series of procedures.

Speaking to Politico he said the university has a task force that is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that examination officers and students adhere to examination rules, noting that it was in this process that they were caught with mobile phones and other foreign materials in the examination hall.

The PRO added that they were given the opportunity to reply through a committee, which in turn submitted the report to the university coordinating committee charged with running the day to day affairs of the university. He further explained that this committee arrived at the decisions based on the recommendations made in the report,

Sesay also noted that the report was presented to the university court, which went through it and endorsed that the students be rusticated.

He stated that two students were expelled for being involved in illegal admission.

Sesay explained that the university has a transparency admission system, wherein students apply online through the institution’s portal, a system wherein students who want to be admitted into the university apply via online. He noted that some prospective students prefer going using the backdoor instead of applying through the portal, explaining that details of the expelled students were not in the portal.

When asked whether students appealed to the university court, the PR officer said no one did and that the duration for appeal had ended.

Sixty  students were punished for malpractices; fifty-eight of them got rusticated and two expelled from Njala University in Bo.
