Mohamed Buya Turay’s goal has won the league title for his Swedish side Djurgaden FC on Saturday. Djurgaden needed just a draw to prevent Malmo FF from wining the trophy on the last day of the season.

Djurgaden went 2-0 down against IFK Norrkoping in the first half on Saturday before rallying the troops for a resurgence in the second half. Jasper Kalstrom scored just five minutes in to the second half before Buya equalized in the 65th minute.

The result was enough for Djurgaden to win the title over Malmo FF by a single point difference.  Malmo defeated Orebro 5-0 to keep their title hopes alive.

This is Buya’s first major title in his career. The 24-year old striker has been an integral part of the Djurgaden squad this season. He scored 15 goals to win the golden boot in the league, becoming the first Sierra Leonean to win a golden boot in a top tier of any European league.

On Saturday, Buya also became the second Sierra Leonean to win the Swedish top tier league after Alhaji Kamara won it with Norrkoping four years ago.

Buya’s successful season at the club comes after a failed spell with Saint-Truidense.

He had a disappointing five-month spell with Saint-Truidense featuring for only 163 minutes in six league appearances and scoring just once.

The club loaned him to Djurgaden in January. 10 months later he has won a league title in Europe.

Buya is a contender for the best Allsvenskan striker award, the winner will be announced on Tuesday, November 5th.

Following the end of the season, Buya is expected to join his international teammates in Freetown in the coming week. Sierra Leone is preparing to start its campaign in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Leone Stars are expected to face the Crocodiles of Lesotho in Freetown on the 13th November and later travel to Port Novo to face the Squirrels of Benin.

Buya’s latest form puts him in pole position to start those two games for Leone Stars. The striker has been the third choice behind Colorado Rapids striker Kei Kamara and East End Lions’ Musa Noah Kamara (Musa Tombo).
