Wellington Community Unites

After winning the 2013 COFA Inter-Community league title, Wellington Community was challenged with the issue of sharing the winning bonus of twenty-five million Leones.

Abdul Rashid Conteh, Chairman of Wellington Sports Association (WSA), said that few members at that time wanted the money shared whilst others were opposed to it and were of the opinion that the money should be kept for developmental purposes in the association’s account.

“We decided finally as an executive to deposit the money into the account,” Conteh said.

The decision taken by the executive made some members aggrieved and they decided to form another association and football team.

This breakaway he said led to the poor performance of the team in 2014 COFA inter-community league. ‘’We were out of the competition in the group stage as defending champions because we were not united as a community and everyone’s mind was bitter,’’ Conteh said.

The community, he said, had been unified with the help of the political heads within Wellington. He said both sides had decided to put their differences aside for the good of the community.

The association had a re-launch over the weekend and the community people where part of it. “They now know that we are moving with one team to actively participate in the COFA competition,’’ said Conteh.

Highlights of the re-launch include the unveiling of their players and supporters’ jersey to the community people ahead of their first match against Mount Aureole on Saturday 30th January at the Parade Grounds.
