Wells props up Balanta School of music

By Kenneth Thompson

A delegation from one of the biggest music schools in London,Wells Music Academy was in Sierra Leone to pass on different music expertise to Balanta Music Academy, the country’s biggest.

Project manager of the visiting school, Amy Hugil, told Politico that their being here was to share a friendly gesture and to help the burgeoning music school where necessary.

She said they brought along some students to meet with those in the Balanta Music Academy and described the Wells Music Academy as the “top Music Academy in England” that offered a wide range of music and had trained a lot of musicians in England.

Principal of Balanta Music Academy, Margaret Fyle said the London school had supported the idea of Balanta participating in international music competitions. She noted that that support had made it possible for her school to be recognised in the international world of music.

Fyle said that Wells had also helped them pay their staff, provided scholarship to students, donated instruments and helped in teaching their students.

She said that this year the London music school donated tubas, saxophones, trumpets, flutes, challo, violin, guitars, French Horn and many others.

She encouraged Sierra Leoneans who wanted to make music a part of their studies to go to the Balanta music academy and be trained in the necessary skills required.

She assured that vulnerable but willing and hardworking students would be offered scholarships to study music.
