Two docked for store breaking and larceny

Steven Sesay, 23 a resident of Waterloo, and Saio Marah, 24 of 3 Mile Waterloo have appeared before magistrate Mark Ngegba for allegedly a store breaking and stealing the properties of one Fatima Kanu.

The total value of the properties stolen is one million two hundred and five thousand three hundred and forty-four New Leones (NLe 1,205,344) or one billion two hundred and five million, three hundred and forty-four thousand Old Leones.

30% women in Sierra Leone’s youthful new cabinet

In the latest announcement from the Office of President Julius Maada Bio, eight women have been appointed ministers with full cabinet and other appointment positions.

The list which was published on Saturday 15th July 2023 had twenty-six names of ministers, with twenty-one being ministers with full cabinet rank. Thirteen out of the twenty-one are male, whilst eight are female.  

Access Bank to take over Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone

 Standard Chartered Bank Sierra Leone has informed its customers of an agreement for the sale of the Bank franchise in Sierra Leone to Access Bank Plc (Access).

“This sale is subject to regulatory approval. With this announcement, we have moved to the final execution stage of the sale,” the official notice letter to their customers read in part.

This follows an announcement in April 2022 by the British Bank to divest from markets across the Africa & Middle East Region including Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone Chancery Building case: First accused weeps in court

The first accused in the ongoing Sierra Leone UN Chancery Building case, Saidu Nallo, during his testimony at the Freetown High Court no.1 was seen sobbing while telling the court that the corruption case was levied against him at a time he had dedicated all his time to national service.

Nallo said that during that time, he had no time with his family  due to his service that was highly demanded at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation and the Mission in New York. 

Guma Valley calls for a halt to deforestation in Sierra Leone

As the supply of water in the Western Area decreases, the Guma Valley Water Company has called on citizens to stop deforestation which is said to be a major factor for the low water supply.

The call was made in a statement issued by the company on the 14th July, 2023.

It recalled that for over 3 decades now, the company has been championing the issue of forest conservation in the Western Area Peninsula Park. The championing it said was a result of the forests and water sources that are closely intertwined.

No proper consultation for boycott – Sierra Leone opposition MP chides at party

Member of Parliament for Karene District Mohamed Bangura  has said their party’s National Advisory Committee (NAC) didn’t do thorough consultation before taking the decision to boycott all forms of governance.

Bangura made this statement in an online interview broadcast on the 15th July 2023 whilst explaining the reasons he did not adhere to the demands made by his party.

Sierra Leone gets 1st female Sports Minister

The second list of appointed cabinet ministers has seen Augusta James Teima become the first woman Sports Minister of Sierra Leone.

Her appointment was confirmed in a press release from the Secretary to President Julius Maada Bio the president released the list of appointed ministers on the 15th July, 2023.

She replaces Ibrahim Nyelenkeh who according to many members of a popular Sports Whatsapp forum did well during his tenure as sports minister.
