MRCG observes heightened disinformation

As part of many institutions that monitored the just concluded multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone, the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) observed that unverified and fake pronouncements of election results were prevalent on social media especially Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp, mostly by either the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) or the All Peoples Congress (APC) party supporters and sympathizers.

PAWP urges ECSL to recruit more Adhoc staff

The PAN African Women Projects (PAWP) has called on the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) to improve the recruitment of Adhoc Staff for the next multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone.

PAWP made this call in a press briefing held at the Atlantic Hotel, Lumley Beach Road in Freetown on the 29th June, 2023 after observing the just concluded general elections in the country.

Sierra Leone security architecture frowns at civil society outfit

The Security Sector has expressed dismay at what it says is the publication of parallel Presidential election results by National Elections Watch (NEW) – a Coalition of Civil Society Organisations operating in Sierra Leone.

 

A statement dated 29th June 2023 signed by the National Security Coordinator Abdulai Caulker who is also Head of Office of National Security (ONS) , said the sector was gravely concerned about NEW’s publication, and its potential   implications for national security.

 

145,000 tourists visited Sierra Leone last year – PRO

Head of Communication and Public Relations National Tourist Board Sierra Leone, Kai Bockarie Saquee says the number of tourists coming to the country rose to 145,000 (one hundred and forty-five thousand) in 2022, which he said is an encouraging development for the country.

AU calls for early voting for journalists in Sierra Leone

The African Union Election Observer Mission (AU EOM) to Sierra Leone’s 2023 General Elections has recommended in their preliminary statement that Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone should make provision for journalists working on Election Day to be among early voters.

They called on ECSL to make the same provision for security personnel and electoral officials working on the election day.

Sierra Leone reappoints anticorruption chief

The Anti-Corruption Commission’s Boss Francis Ben Kaifala has been reappointed by President Julius Maada Bio to serve another five-year as commissioners of the commission.

According to a press statement issued by the commission on the 29th of June 2023, the commissioner was reappointed pursuant to Section 4(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act, 2008 as amended in 2019.
